Nutcracker Season

by | Nov 14, 2025 | Blog

The air is crisp, and a scurry and flurry of activity has descended on Ballet Bloch in preparation for our 9th annual Nutcracker production. We had a wonderful turnout for our auditions in September. Boys and girls from around the lower mainland came to audition to be a part of our holiday classic. Now costumes are being fitted and rehearsals are in full swing. A huge thank you to our sponsor, Yeager Employment Law, for supporting Ballet Bloch’s The Nutcracker.

This issue will highlight some of our upcoming events. We will be performing at Westcott Elementary in West Vancouver on November 25th for the younger primary grades. Parents and students are encouraged to come support our dancers as they perform at Spirit of the Season at the Shipyards on November 29th. We also learn about the GYROTONIC® method of exercise with an informative article by Spiral Movement Arts. Our spotlight, this issue features one of our graduates, Madeleine Nicholls, and her continued studies and first professional contract.

Make sure you get your Nutcracker tickets. We are having two shows this year on Sunday December 7th at 3pm and 6pm. Dancers are looking forward to sharing their love of dance with lively and appreciative audiences the first weekend of December at the Kay Meek Arts Centre in West Vancouver.

Please enjoy the issue and share with us any suggestions for future editions.

Spiral Movement Arts – The GYROTONIC® Method

Juliu Horvath, a former professional ballet dancer, developed the GYROTONIC® method of exercise after his experience with injury and recovery. This method supports strength, mobility and expressive movement with the principles of coordination, rhythm and flow, the same that dancers use in class.

Benefits for Dancers

Training with the Gyrotonic system can help dancers with physical challenges such as refining turnout, improving extension, precision, line and increasing strength without affecting body aesthetic. Dancers will find more ease and efficiency, even in complex movements, using specialized equipment that encourages the body to move in spirals that mimic natural human motion.

Similar to dance, the methods employed by Gyrotonic emphasize oppositional energy, expanding and lengthening one part of the body, while stabilizing another. By combining strength and mobility, dancers can enhance their performance and reduce fatigue.

Recovery and Longevity

Injury prevention and recovery can also be supported by Gyrotonic practice. Dancers can support healing and return to dance by maintaining mobility in the joints and elasticity in connective tissue through the supportive exercises offered.

Foundation of Practice

Four fundamental spinal movements are the heart of the Gyrotonic system:

  1. Arch (spinal movement)
  2. Curl (spinal flexion)
  3. Sideways arch (side flexion)
  4. Spiral (spinal rotation)

Focused breathing is combined with these motions to build a sense of rhythm and fluidity. These foundational movements are usually introduced before moving onto the equipment and form a basis for arranging the limbs with the movement of the spine.

Gyrotonic training complements regular dance training and can be used as a warm-up before dancing.

Madeleine Nicholls started training at Ballet Bloch in 2017 at age 12yrs. She studied, under the direction of Tracy-Lea Bloch (Artistic Director) and faculty teachers: Muriel Teague, Thomas Teague and Monica Proenca for six years. Maddy’s highest accolade in the ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet certification is receiving 100% for her Intermediate exam – unheard of! Whilst at the school she also danced lead roles: Fritz, Clara, Sugarplum Fairy and Dream Clara in our annual Nutcracker, Odette in Swan Lake, and Juliet in Romeo & Juliet.

Upon graduation, Maddy attended The Royal Conservatoire in Den Haag, Netherlands. There she had classes including: Classical Ballet Technique, Classical Repertoire, Pas de Deux, Improvisation, Dutch Repertoire, Modern Repertoire, Study and Career Planning, Creating a Solo, and Health and Wellbeing. She received her Bachelor of Arts within two years.

This year Maddy signed her first company contract as an Internship with Introdans based in Arnhem, Netherlands. She has been touring with the company and is performing in Carmen in December.

We are so excited for this young artist, who is following her dreams and making huge bounds onstage in Europe.
